An abjad (/ ˈ æ b dʒ æ d /, Arabic: أبجد; also abgad) is a writing system in which only consonants are represented, leaving vowel sounds to be inferred by the reader. This contrasts with alphabets, which provide graphemes for both consonants and vowels. The term was introduced in 1990 by Peter T. Daniels.

Some modern authors distinguish between consonantal scripts of the Semitic type, called " abjads " since 1996, and "true alphabets" in the narrow sense, [8] [9] the distinguishing criterion being that true alphabets consistently assign letters to both consonants and vowels on an equal basis, while the symbols in a pure abjad stand only for conso

An abjad is a writing system that only uses consonants and not vowels. The word "abjad" comes from the first four letters of the Arabic script, which are alef, bāʾ, jīm, and dāl. On the other hand, an alphabet is a writing system that uses letters to represent sounds, including both consonants and vowels. The word "alphabet" comes An alphabet is a standardized set of basic written symbols or graphemes (called letters) that represent the phonemes of certain spoken languages. Contrast e.g. abjad. Even though vowels can be added in some abjads, they are not needed to write a word correctly. Abjad are commonly written from right to left, rather than left to right, like in other writing systems. Well-known examples of abjads are the Arabic alphabet and the Hebrew alphabet .
The Latin alphabet, also known as the Roman alphabet, is the collection of letters originally used by the ancient Romans to write the Latin language. Largely unaltered with the exception of additions (the letters J and U ) and extensions (such as diacritics), it forms the Latin script that is used to write many modern European languages, including English.
As nouns the difference between abugida and alphabet is that abugida is a writing system, similar to a syllabary, in which each symbol represents a consonant with a particular vowel. Some languages that use abugidas are Amharic, Hindi, Burmese, Cree and Ojibwe (Canadian Aboriginal syllabics). An abugida is a kind of syllabary in which the vowel is changed by modifying the base consonant symbol The Arabic alphabet (Arabic: الْأَبْجَدِيَّة الْعَرَبِيَّة, al-abjadīyah al-ʿarabīyah [al.ʔab.d͡ʒa.dijːa‿l.ʕa.ra.bijːa] or الْحُرُوف الْعَرَبِيَّة, al-ḥurūf l-ʿarabīyah), or Arabic abjad, is the Arabic script as specifically codified for writing the Arabic language.
