Jasa Tour Raja Ampat ï»żOne of the main coral reefs at Raja Ampat, an Indonesian island chain home to perhaps the worldâs richest marine biodiversity, was severely damaged last week when a Bahamian-flagged cruise ship smashed into it at low tide, according to an official 90-meter Caledonian Sky, owned by tour operator Noble Caledonia, ran aground in an uncharted shoal in West Papua province after completing a bird-watching trip on Waigeo Island on 4 British-owned company described the incident as âunfortunateâ and said it was âcooperating fully with the relevant authoritiesâ. Damage to the vessel was minimal and it has already set sail after being questioned by official evaluation team found that the ship had been caught in low tide despite being equipped with GPS and radar instruments, according to team member Ricardo Tapilatu, head of the Research Center for Pacific Marine Resources at the University of Papua.âA tugboat from Sorong city was deployed to help refloat the cruise ship, which is something that shouldnât have happened because it damaged the reef even worse,â Tapilatu said. âThey shouldâve waited for high tideâ to refloat the 4,290-tonne Caledonian Sky, which was carrying 102 passengers and 79 crew on a 16-night journey from Papua New Guinea to the Philippines, damaged approximately 1,600 square meters of coral at a diving site known as Crossover incident resulted in the destruction of the ecosystemâs structural habitat and the reduction or loss of diversity of eight coral genera, including acropora, porites, montipora and stylophora.âThis is what we found during our investigation into the site,â Tapilatu said. âWe are currently finishing the report and will submit our recommendations to the district office next week.âThe Caledonian Sky after it ran aground at Raja Ampat. Photograph Courtesy Stay Raja AmpatLocal homestay operator Stay Raja Ampat posted on Facebook âHow can this happen? Was a 12-year-old at the wheel? Anchor damage from ships like these is bad enough, but actually grounding a ship on a reef takes it to a whole new level.âDue to Raja Ampatâs special biodiversity and its status as one of the worldâs most popular dive sites, as well as the fact that the damage occurred in a national park, the evaluation team will recommend the company pay compensation of $800-$1,200 ÂŁ650-ÂŁ985 per square meter, for a total of $ according to Tapilatu. The standard rate is $200-$400 per square meter.âIf the shipâs owner disagrees with the claim, then typically the government will take it to court,â Tapilatu said. If the company and government can reach an agreement, it will likely take a year or two for the district administration to receive the said the money would be used to revive the reef, a process he estimated could take a decade; to set more mooring buoys across the area to prevent ships from sailing into shallow zones; and to map out sailing corals just outside the impact zone left compared with those destroyed in the impact. Photograph Courtesy Stephanie Venables/Marine Megafauna Foundation/MongabayâThe government has had talks about compensation with the ship company, and Iâm optimistic that this wonât go to court. Unfortunately, there will not be any moves for coral revival until we get the money.âAndi Rusandi, director for conservation and marine biodiversity at the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said local conservation and revival efforts were within the local governmentâs authority, but he said he would follow the its statement, Noble Caledonia said it was âfirmly committed to protection of the environment, which is why it is imperative that the reasons for it are fully investigated, understood and any lessons learned incorporated in operating procedures.â

Raja Ampat, or four kings, is located off the northwest tip of Birdâs Head Peninsula in West Papa the western portion of New Guinea, politically associated with Indonesia. The four kings refer to the four main islands, Salawati, Waigeo, Batanta, and Misool, though legend has it that the names actually refer to four men who were hatched from four of seven eggs found by a woman the three other eggs hatched to reveal a ghost, a woman, and a stone. Each man lived on one of the four islands where they eventually became king. Legends and myths aside, one fact remains This region has an unusually high variety of marine life and is recognized as the worldâs center of marine biodiversity. Dozens of surveys by the worldâs leading scientists have found that the region possesses over 600 species of corals nearly 75% of all known species of reef-building corals and more than 1500 species of tropical marine fish about half of all known tropical marine fish. The astoundingly high level of marine life is due, in part, to plate tectonics, high amounts of water that flow through the region, and a variety of marine habitats that are found in the area. Pristine reef flats, secret bays, swift channels, deep drop-offs, shallow seamounts, mangroves, marine lakes, and protected coral gardens are but a sample of the types of marine habitats that can be found in the roughly 50,000 square kilometer area of Raja Ampat. Along with the four main islands, Raja Ampat has over 1500 breathtaking islands and islets that offer a scenic backdrop to the unspoiled underwater wilderness. The majority of the islands, especially the smaller islands and islets are made of limestone and the main islands are mostly volcanic in origin with deposits of limestone and sandstone. Dense jungle and rainforest dominate much of the hilly, craggy terrain, making perfect habitats for over 350 species of birds including parrots, hornbills, and birds of paradise. We wrote our snorkeling itinerary to take advantage of the huge diversity of marine life that abounds in Raja Ampat, from tiny neon gobies to large reef mantas. Whether we float blissfully above a shallow protected reef or get whisked along a fringing reef, each day we will snorkel in a variety of marine habitats that makes Raja Ampat such a special destination. Though our main focus will be on the incredibly rich underwater world, we will have opportunities to view rare or endemic birds, summit dramatic rock islands for incredible views, and relax on idyllic white-sand beaches â but not too long because we have a lot of snorkeling to do. We have guided over 50 snorkeling tours to this region and have come to know more than just a few islands and snorkel sites, largely unknown to other operators, that have some of the best reefs and scenery that Raja Ampat, the Heart of the Coral Triangle, has to offer!X ITINERARY Our snorkeling tour begins and ends in Jakarta, Indonesia. One round trip, internal flight Jakarta-Sorong-Jakarta. Upon our arrival in Sorong, we will board our boat and cruise towards our first destination within the Raja Ampat archipelago. Please note that although we visit many of the islands and island groups in the sample itinerary below, each of our departures is unique and that weather, tides, and opportunities to explore all play a role in the decisions about our daily schedule as well as the overall itinerary. Day 1 Jakarta / FM7 Hotel Jakarta Meals provided D Meet in Jakarta, Indonesia at our group hotel, the Bandara International, for the tour orientation and welcome dinner. As is often the case with our internal flight, we will depart for Sorong in the late evening, thus our overnightâ will be in transit to Sorong. Overnight FM7 Hotel, Jakarta. Day 2 Sorong / Gaia Love / Waisai Meals provided B,L,D Fly to Sorong and transfer to our live-aboard boat, the Gaia Love. Boat orientation and lunch before we depart for our snorkeling adventure into the islands. While we do not plan to have the chance to snorkel today, if time and weather permits, we will give it our best. Overnight Gaia Love. Day 3 Penemu / Fam Islands Meals provided B,L,D The Fam islands, Penemu being the largest, offer us the chance to drift snorkel along incredibly healthy, colorful walls where huge schools of fusiliers, unicornfishes, surgeonfishes, snappers, rabbitfishes, and sweetlips crowd along the edges while the current passes by. In the afternoon, we will snorkel in a quiet lagoon where we can lazily float above fields of delicate branching corals, some that can only be found in this specific habitat! Penemu Island is also home to some of the most stunning island scenery in Raja Ampat. Weâll have a chance to take a dinghy tour through the network rock islands and finish the tour with the chance to walk up 400 stairs for the ultimate in panoramic views! Overnight Gaia Love. Day 4 â 7 Alyui Bay / Wayag Meals provided B,L,D Ajyui Bay is one of the premier destinations in Raja Ampat. The bay possesses a variety of habitats including robust passages where brisk water movement supports a dazzling amount of bizarre and colorful life along the shallow edges of the islands, as well as protected reefs in private lagoons where a mixture of juvenile and adult reef fishes play amongst the tangle of staghorn coral thickets. Weâll also snorkel sea grass and sand flats to look for rare critters such as waspish and tasseled wobbegongs. To the north of Alyui Bay is Wayag, a remote island archipelago otherwise knowns as paradise. The convoluted network of picture-prefect, jungle-capped limestone islands create narrow passages, hidden lagoons, and shallow platform reefs. Our snorkels range from exposed seawards reefs to sheltered coral gardens and mangroves. Dinghy tours around Wayag rank among the best on the planet! We will meander our way through intimate passages made by towering limestone islands and stop off to put our feet in pure white sand before returning to our gorgeous moorage within the islands. Overnight Gaia Love. Day 8 Pef / Secret Bay Meals provided B,L,D The combination of limestone and mangrove islands in the Pef island group create magnificent shallow habitats that often possess a large diversity of sponges and sea fans. This is easily the best place to see the spot-tail blennny, marvel at enormous sponges both fan and barrel, and catch a glimpse of a ray or juvenile shark as they swim among the mangroves in the shallows. Secret Bay is a drift snorkel that begins at the mouth of channel and ends in an intimate bay. Along the way, weâll get whisked by huge fields of purple and orange soft corals and sea fans! We will also tour the bay via dinghies to look for and hear birds and enjoy the scenery, the tides will determine our timing. Overnight Gaia Love. Day 9 Yangeffo / Gam Meals provided B,L,D The tiny mangrove islands of Yangeffo are separated from the main island of Gam by little more than a 75m-wide channel. Normally, mangrove islands would be fairly turbid and, as such, lack high coral abundance and diversity, but the channel focuses strong water flow that flushes the area of sediment. This results in clear-water mangroves where a huge number of corals use the prop roots of mangroves as substrate to grow upon. The clash of habitatsâ makes for amazing snorkeling opportunities! We will snorkel both sides of the channel, especially to take advantage of the reef that extends from Gam. Overnight Gaia Love. Day 10 Mansuar / Dampier Strait Meals provided B,L,D Dampier Strait is where the big fish are found! The seaward reefs along Kri and Mansuar that are simply some of the best Raja Ampat has to offer. Huge schools of snapper, bumphead parrotfish, barracudas, unicornfishes, plus the thousands of reef fishes make this a must-do for fish-loving snorkelers. Look for sharks, turtles, and rays as they are common sightings as well. Weâll spend time along the jetty where current-exposed, weathered pilings act as substrate for forests of colorful sea fans. Overnight Gaia Love. Day 11 Batanta / Dayang Meals provided B,L,D Across Dampier Strait to the south, is the lush, volcanic island of Batanta. The shallow coral gardens around Dayang, located at the northwestern tip of Batanta, contain a mind-blowing diversity of hard and soft corals in every shape and color imaginable. Schools of fish number in the thousands and if we look closely out into the blue, a manta ray or dugong may be swimming by! Overnight Gaia Love. Day 12 Sorong / Jakarta / FM7 Hotel, Jakarta Meals provided B,L,D Disembark for our connection to Jakarta. Check in to our group hotel, the Bandara International. Farewell dinner at the hotel. Overnight FM7 Hotel, Jakarta. There are several routes that usually chosen by tourist such as via Makassar, via Jakarta, and via Manado. All of them will need to transit in Sorong. There are many airlines that provide direct flights to Sorong. If you are from Jakarta, then you just need to fly to Sorong. Airlines that provide flight from Jakarta to Sorong are Sriwijaya, Batik Air, and Xpress. From Sorong to Raja Ampat you can use boats to cross Sorong and go to Raja Ampat. Use taxi to go to the harbor, and choose whether you want to use Bahari Express Marina Express, or Fajar Mulia. The different is that Bahari and Marina are faster than Fajar how about via Makassar and Manado? Itâs just the same. Makassar and Manado has direct access to Sorong. In Makassar you can use Garuda, Xpress, Sriwijaya, and Batik Air, while for Manado you can only use Lion Air to directly go to Sorong. From Sorong you go to Raja Ampat via Waisai. Not only by boat, Waisai can be reached by airlines. If using airlines you will be take off in Marinda to Raja Ampat by boat is another way you can use if you are coming from Bali. There are several ships that can take you to Sorong. But still, the simplest way is by using airlines since Bali to Raja Ampat distance is 2 hours 18 minutes by flying. You can imagine how long if you take boat. But there is no direct flight from Bali to Sorong, so you need to again transit in Makassar, Manado, or even Ambon for the best option, and then fly to is some ways to get to Raja Ampat. There are no direct flights from outside of the country to Raja Ampat also. So for example, how to get to Raja Ampat from Malaysia, is that you have to fly to Jakarta first from Malaysia. After arrived in Jakarta, fly again to Sorong. Only then can you take a boat or to shorten the time once again use airlines and get off at Waisai airport. The team is amazing and welcoming. They do know perfectly their dive sites. They have 2 boats to go on trips or local dives organization was on point. We were able to dive every single day! I had my own dive gear which I highly recommend when diving overseas. Special thanks to Anni for being super responsive and helpful, thanks to Fatur for his great energy !! Tripadvisor performs checks on express the wonderful experience my brother and I had here. I completed my OWD in 2017 and wanted my brother to discover joys of diving. Heike was an excellent instructor for my brothers OWD course and was incredibly practical regarding skills on top of PADI curriculum. Able to complete some amazing fun dives with the fantastic divemaster Mario, who was a joy to dive with and had great chat. Great attitude towards coral, able to point out and spot things. All the staff are incredibly friendly Heike, Paul, Captain, Romy, Pascal, quality gear and amazing experience. Loved the aspect of the dive centre being smaller than most, got a very personal touch to them. Couldnât recommend this dive shop more and would also suggest looking into the homestays right next to them too. We stayed at Coconut house which was literally right next door to the dive shop. Incredibly sad to leave and will try save up as much money as possible to return as soon as!Written June 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on CA3 contributionsWe are snorkelers. Although this is a diving resort, they provided specially tailored trips for us as to snorkel in beautiful shallow reefs and even trips to see Manta staffs go out of their way to keep us comfortable and happy. The food is buffet style, well thought out with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Plenty of fruits. The location and facility is the best in Raja we enjoyed our stay and will be back January 20, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on just and i mean hours ago finished a week of diving with Githa and Marsel at Arborek Dive Shop and what a phenomenal time we had. Manta madness. Githa is especially bubbly, passionate and enthusiastic and we loved the vibes. A few things to note they are not dive instructors, they are very good guides who are great at finding things but they wont teach you how to dive. My recommendation is you should have a MINIMUM of 50 dives before diving here. The currents are strong and unpredictable and often times Githa is filiming on her GoPro because 1 thats how she markets her business2 she is a part of a program to track and document local is a locally owned dive shop. They wont work on Sundays or religious holidays, so you would have to be a twit to ask them to or complain if they say no. There were a couple of absolute donkeys who suck at diving and refused to pay for their dives. Dont be those people. If you arent an experienced diver or youre expecting western standards, dont come. If you are a comfortable diver and love mantas and passionate divers then come and enjoy without hesitation. Thanks for everything, we had an amazing December 29, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on an amazing place! There are acrually no more words needed to describe our stay at Pef. Amazing stands for all Pef teams like chefs, housekeeping, maintenance, back office, band and of course the dive team with which we spent our time the most. We were really sad to leave this place after our two weeks stay! The area offers great diving with alive reefs, lots of fish and convenient boats! Best is only one buddy team per guide. Never had such amazing conditions with all my previous diving. I can highly recommend this place for everyone. Pef offers so much to do beside the diving such as great snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, rain forrest walk,... there is always something you can do from young to old! Thank you Maya for creating such a great place! One day we will come back to Pef thats is clear!Written April 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on spent almost two weeks aboard the Pindito, making up to 4 dives each day. This boat runs so well and so smoothly. It's hard to imagine a better live-aboard diving crew really knows Raja Ampat. The cruise directors chose the sites carefully depending on conditions, plans, and the desires of the divers. The dive guides were skilled, knowledgeable, and careful. Everyone from the panga drivers, to the tank handlers, to guys looking after your equipment, to the stewards handing you a cup of water and snack or a hot chocolate after a night dive just went about their business with tremendous spirit and efficiency. I felt very well taken care food was delicious and the stewards not only knew who I was but what my food preference were. Because I'm a vegetarian, they made sure I had a good, tasty protein selection for every ship itself is nicely laid out and has a very cosy vibe. The deck upstair provided a great spot to socialize or just to lie and recuperate. If you're a birder bring a pair of binoculars. You might see hornbills, sea eagles, kites, macaws, parrots and who knows what else as the boat idles by one of the many small islands in Raja thing I liked is that the management and the crew exhibited a sense of stewardship about the environment we were exploring. And I felt that the management was mindful not only of the guests but of the crew as well. That might explain why the crew went about their work with such good March 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on best six days that I can remember! We loved our comfortable paradise cabin with en suite bathroom, right at the edge of the beach. The meals were fantastic, day after day. The location was perfect, with a great "house reef" just 100m offshore, fabulous birds in the trees overhead and birds of paradise not far away, and an interesting village nearby with another reef, cool cemetery, etc. Although not many guests were around to share boat trips, we managed to have two excellent days on/under the water, seeing dolphins, sharks, turtles, cuttlefish, nudibranchs, kajillion fish, and an incredible variety of healthy corals. Although internet is not the best, we were able to work remotely while at the homestay. A memorable experience, which we would love to January 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on dive guides are very professional and arranging. If you want to see something in particular, ask them and they will try to bring you to the places with the best chances of spotting it provided that you have the level to dive there safely. Moreover they have super-human abilities to spot really small and difficult t see animals such as pigmey seahorses, sea-ghost pipe-fishes, hairy shrimps, frog-fishes, etc. I have a PADI divemaster and hundreds of dives around the world, yet I did learn a good deal about how to find small wildlife from these guys! The diving was always performed in a safe and environmentally conscious way! Prices are honest if not cheap compared to all the other dive-centers I have seen in the area. Totally worth the detour! Also, the guides all speak English February 5, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on RPerth, Australia36 contributionsMy first trip to Raja Ampat in March 2023. Diving was superb with stunning coral in very healthy condition. Unfortunately the Southern area seems to have been plundered by fishing during COVID presumably when there weren't so many eyes on the area. Only small schools of barracuda, trevally etc. Only a few reef sharks seen on the trip. I was told by friends it was much better in terms of biomass pre-COVID. Hopefully it will bounce back in a few years... In terms of the iLike, it is a well-run boat thanks to cruise director Nicky and the crew. Very safe and professional. The boat has plenty of room for the guests to spread out, although shaded, cool areas were in shorter supply. The placement of the engine/generator exhaust pipes at the waterline mid-ship meant the main cabin needed its windows shut to avoid filling up with exhaust fumes, making it a hot place to be - especially with the open kitchen in this area also. The exhaust fumes had an annoying tendency to get sucked back into the dining area at the stern which meant for a sore throat after about an hour of sitting there. Luckily there were some shade sails on the foredeck which was also the smoking area. My surface time was spent trying not to get roasted in the sun whilst chasing clean air!The living quarters were comfortable with enough space for each guest. Obviously being a wooden ship there was all the expected creaking etc. so some earplugs for the first night or two is recommended until you get used it. The hull was reportedly deeper than other wooden ships with less rolling in bigger seas. Thankfully we had very calm seas so didn't get to test it out. The iLike is faster than other wooden ships in the area due to its dual engines so travel time was reduced and we covered a fairly large area during the trip. The dive equipment is well worn but reasonably well maintained. The dive tenders and boat boys do a good job with efficient transitions to and from the dive sites. The dive guides were good but nothing really outstanding - they just did their job. They were safe and reliable which is the main thing I guess. The cruise director Nicky did a fantastic job in organising the crew and guests. His enthusiasm was consistent throughout the trip, rain or shine. The food was impressive with the volume provided from small kitchen area. The food was basic but enthusiastically served and presented well. Alcohol was available to buy no BYO with prices in Euro, meaning a 200-300% mark-up for a can of Bintang. I find using a foreign currency to charge in this way off-putting. It is an unsubtle way to disguise overpriced beer â just price in IDR and Iâm sure youâll sell just as many. The drinks were accounted for on an honesty system with the tab settled at the end of the trip which was settling of finances at the end of the trip was really messy. Due to marine park and equipment hire fees not being included in the trip price, guests were expected carry a large amount of cash with them 500-600 Euros in some cases. I didnât have the cash on me, there were no credit card reading/transfer facilities on the ship, and Paypal direct funds transfer was the only option offered. The internet speed on the mobile network in Sorong is super-slow so itâs recommended to set up Paypal for direct funds transfer before going on the trip load your account with enough Euro to allow instantaneous transfer as funds take a few days to clear when you load them. Unfortunately my final night was spent scrambling to try to get funds cleared instead of spending it with other guests doing the usual end-of-trip stuff. In the end I resorted to waking up and hour earlier and driving into Sorong to find an ATM and withdraw 1,000,000 IDR in multiple transactions. It was a ridiculous amount of cash to carry around and embarrassing to bring back and have counted in front of the Indonesian crew. The other financial issue is the matter of tipping. It is so gross to be asked for a tip with an envelope at the end of a trip. Just pay the crew what they are worth and avoid the cringe-worthy tipping exercise! Itâs not part of Indonesian culture. It is a cash-grab from a captive audience and is gross when presented in this way. Gratuities for excellent service is fine but expected tipping is awful. If the crew are relying on tips which they arenât then charge the guests more Iâd happily pay extra to avoid end-of-trip transactions, pay the crew more, and stop doing this. Itâs not the United States. It feels cheap. Stop it. All-in-all a good trip on a very well-run liveaboard. Iâll return to Raja Ampat in a few years and hopefully the biomass has been restored if the fishing is reduced. I worry that the best times are behind us in this region in terms of pristine reef habitats. The iLike is a nice ship but the clumsy/messy management of finances by the onshore/head office team by splitting up the bill etc. was disappointing. Iâll probably look elsewhere next time to avoid finishing the trip like that. It doesnât leave a good impression. Hopefully those issues are rectified in future for other guests. Cheers!Written March 31, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on dive trip with Big Blue Indonesia to Raja Ampat, West Papua was a great adventure for us 2 divers with +500 dives each and 1 snorkeler. My friend and former boss at a dive business in South Korea has now established a dive boat operation after a couple of years of unbelievable effort. This is one of the must-see dive areas with unbeatable bio-diversity, tropical water, and still unspoilt. Most dive spots were great for snorkelers or they just used one of the two zodiacs to reach the perfect spot. We had 2 weeks on board on the beautiful traditional wooden craft. This really was a fantastic dive trip with plenty of new corals and creatures we had not seen before, impressive schools of fish, manta rays, sharks and some interesting overhangs and caves. It was the best ever to be on board on a well equipped and carefully restored dive boat. Plenty of space for torches, cameras etc. No worries on the dive deck including Nitrox. The charming crew did spoil us 24h! The dive guides briefings were always well explained, never in a rush and safety was always first. Our recommendation go for 2 weeks! it is so beautiful and the time goes too quickly. We also would say a big thank you to everyone. As we worked in dive business we know how much work is behind the scenes to make such a great unforgettable dive experiences. We hope to see you again soon! We just loved it. Also after the trip we stayed a few nights at a little island gateway were we could see bird of paradise.Written July 20, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
